Arthur Allan Wilson (1944–2024) was a Scottish artist and teacher who trained in Sculpture at Edinburgh College of Art, later completing a BA in Arts & Humanities with the Open University. A much loved and quietly unconventional art teacher at Wallace High School, he inspired four decades of pupils - encouraging confidence, independent thinking and a belief in their own abilities. Rather than pursue a career in the art world, Wilson devoted his life to teaching, giving his time, talent and attention to generations of young people. Working privately throughout his life, he developed a distinctive visual language rooted in structure, form and disciplined mark making. His expansive studio collection, largely unseen during his lifetime, reflects a sculptor’s sensitivity to movement, space and process.

An original gouache on paper by Scottish artist Arthur Allan Wilson, reducing the landscape to broad bands of muted blue, cream, black and soft green.

Wilson’s work often moves between observation and abstraction, simplifying familiar forms into strong blocks of colour and line. This piece has that same pared-back quality, with the landscape still clearly present beneath the abstraction.
